The Precinct includes some major cultural and historical sites in Alice
Springs. Allow several hours to take an historical and cultural tour which

This is both a research facility and an exhibit of the work done by
anthropologist Ted Strehlow in the early part of the twentieth century
in documenting the lives of Aboriginal people in the Hermannsberg area,
west of Alice Springs. While the research area is not open to the
public enquiries and requests for access from visiting professionals will

A living railway museum depicting the history of the first Ghan train
from Adelaide to Alice Springs 1929 - 1980. The display has a museum
and the restored train offers a trip along a section of the original line.
For train buffs, the locomotive and coach restoration sheds are open
to the public. There are no specific facilities for access to these
sheds and there are several rail lines to cross to access them.

This unique exhibition tells of the other half of history - her story.
"ORDINARY WOMEN - EXTRAORDINARY LIVES" celebrates the many roles
that women from all backgrounds have played in the development of Australia.
The lives and roles of women in 'opening up' Central Australian are remembered
in a specific exhibit which recognises their ingenuity, courage and commitment
and the particular difficulties they faced of remoteness and isolation.

Hartley Street School was the first official school building in Alice
Springs. It has been preserved and is now the home of the National
Trust.

The first gaol in Alice Springs (next door to Court House), it was
built from local stone and was operational from 1908 to 1938. Open
every day.

Some excellent exhibits of early life styles and artifacts, pedal radio
and the story of Rev. John Flynn and his efforts to provide a "mantle of
safety" through the flying doctor service. Some attendants are seniors
who have personal knowledge and anecdotes of the early days.

Olive Pink Botanic Garden, Golf Course Causeway

Olive Pink was an anthropologist and botanist who lived her later years
on this site. She was passionate about the native flora and did considerable
work to ensure the diversity of vegetation in Central Australia was recorded
and promoted. This botanic garden continues her work. It is
a fine example of local vegetation.
Parking is unsealed and no specific accessible parking bays are provided.
Paths are formed and well compacted though not sealed. The visitors
centre is accessible.

Road Transport Hall of Fame,

A display of vintage and veteran motor cycles, cars and trucks with
an emphasis on the development of road transport in the Northern Territory.
Of particular interest is the development of road trains as a method of
moving large quantities of goods and materials to remote areas.

Royal Flying Doctor Base,

The Royal Flying Doctor Service provides medical services to remote
communities and stations. It is the realisation of the vision of
Rev. John Flynn to provide a 'mantle of safety' across the inland of Australia.
The Base demonstrates the evolution of this service and the area covered

Central Australian troops have served with distinction in all conflicts
from Gallipoli and World War I, to the present day. During WWII, Alice
Springs was a major army camp and transit point for troops and equipment
on the way to Darwin and the front line.
This exhibition of memorabillia maps that history from 1899.

This is an extension of the 'mantle of safety' vision of Rev. John
Flynn. The Pedal Radio provided the means to take quality education
to children in remote communities and cattle stations via radio and makes
the School of the Air the largest classroom in the world covering several
thousand square kilometres.
The Old Telegraph Station,

The Telegraph Station was the first significant building in Central
Australia. It accommodated the Station staff and provided the working
telegraph that linked eastern and southern Australia to Darwin and the
world from 1872 until the cable was severed at the outbreak of WW II.
It has served several roles since then and is now restored as a national
park.
